"How long should my blog post be?" It's one of the most common questions in content marketing. We analyzed 10,000 top-ranking pages across multiple industries to find data-driven answers.

The Short Answer

The average word count of a first-page Google result is 1,890 words. But this number varies significantly by industry and search intent.

More importantly, we found that word count alone doesn't determine rankings. Comprehensiveness and relevance matter more than hitting a specific number.

Our Methodology

We analyzed the top 10 results for 1,000 keywords across 10 industries:

  • Technology & SaaS
  • Finance & Banking
  • Healthcare
  • E-commerce & Retail
  • Marketing
  • Legal
  • Real Estate
  • Education
  • Travel
  • Food & Recipes

Average Word Count by Industry

Industry Avg. Word Count
Finance & Banking2,450
Healthcare2,320
Legal2,180
Technology & SaaS2,050
Marketing1,920
Education1,850
Real Estate1,680
E-commerce1,520
Travel1,450
Food & Recipes1,180

Word Count by Search Intent

Search intent has an even bigger impact than industry:

Informational Queries ("how to," "what is")
Average: 2,100 words
Commercial Queries ("best," "reviews," "comparison")
Average: 1,850 words
Transactional Queries ("buy," "pricing," "signup")
Average: 890 words
Navigational Queries (brand + feature)
Average: 650 words

The Relationship Between Length and Rankings

Our analysis revealed an interesting pattern: there's a correlation between word count and rankings, but it's not linear.

  • Position 1-3: Average 2,050 words
  • Position 4-6: Average 1,890 words
  • Position 7-10: Average 1,720 words

However, we also found that the longest content doesn't always win. Content that was 20%+ longer than competitors often performed worse—likely due to padding or poor organization.

Key Finding

The sweet spot is matching or slightly exceeding (by 10-15%) the average word count of current top-ranking content. Going significantly longer doesn't provide additional ranking benefit.

Quality Signals That Matter More Than Length

Our analysis showed these factors had stronger correlations with rankings than word count:

  1. Comprehensiveness: Covering all major subtopics
  2. Structure: Clear headings and logical organization
  3. Unique Value: Original insights or data
  4. Freshness: Recently updated content
  5. User Engagement: Time on page and scroll depth

Practical Recommendations

Based on our data, here's how to determine the right length for your content:

  1. Analyze the top 10 results for your target keyword
  2. Calculate the average word count
  3. Aim for that average + 10-15%
  4. Focus on comprehensiveness, not padding
  5. Let the topic dictate the length

Conclusion

There's no universal "ideal" blog post length. The right length depends on your industry, the search intent, and what competitors are ranking with. Use data to guide your decisions, not arbitrary rules.
